Informative speech: The outcome.

Overall, I'm happy with the outcome of my second speech. I think that I'm beginning to feel more comfortable with speaking in front of the class and I think that I will only get better from here. I also feel that I do better with speechs like the informative as oppose to telling a story, like in the narrative. There are areas that I must approve upon, such as memory, eye-contact, and delivery, but I think that will improve throughout the semester. There were problems in my video, but I think that I didn't let that get in my way too much.

I really liked Collen's attention getter, it made me have an intrest in the material right away.I also thought that she did really well on her powerpoint presentation. It made me understand what she was talking about, I don't know a lot about data and she used great examples to make the audience understand what it is. I also liked Sonia's speech about messages in advertising. It's a subject that we see everyday in our lives, and I thought that she did really great with memory and eye-contact.

Have a great spring break everyone!!!

Informative Speech: Rhetorical Problems.

The first and most important rhetorical problem I have is organization. The way I typed my first outline is the style I use when I write papers. I have to learn how to order my outline in a way where I just state key facts and than sub-points under the key facts. I'm getting better at doing that, it's just a lot of information to sub-point.

The second problem I have is the time of my speech. I have a lot of information on Carrie Fisher, but I need to streach the time out to fit the time limit. For example, I need to only use the key elements in my speech to not just ramble on the subject. I'm postive about the outcome and it should be kinda fun.

Speech Presentation

On Monday, half the class presented their narrative speeches and I was impressed. The aspects I noticed in all of the speeches are the attention to details. The details aspect of our project was apparent From the Bulimic narrative to the coming-out story. The use of pauses was employed throughout the coming-out story. I thought the pauses gave the class a second to recall what the character must be going through, by using our own experiences in reliving a moment in our lives where we had to tell someone close to us a secret.

The use of gestures was evident in Lauren’s speech where she speaks of her Grandfather. She uses her hands to tell the story and the connection between each character. She also decides to not stand behind the podium, which gave the class a more personal relationship to her, as if she was talking to a friend. In the coming-out story, he also uses gestures to emphasize the nervousness the character felt as she told her daughter she was gay. He stumbles the words in his speech on purpose, taking on the persona of the character. Throughout Monday’s narratives, each speech was easy to follow and through the details I became involved in each story.

My Narrative Speech

My Narrative speech is on the topic of my personal experience with poverty. The speech is coming along good, but my only problem is organization. The way I type is the way I speak, so I need to better organize my thoughts. I’m in the process of finishing my outline. In class Wednesday, we got in groups and commented on our fellow classmates ideas. We came to the conclusion that I need more characters in my speech to give the issue an identity.

I have one character but I’ve decided to add others to capture the audience’s attention. I don’t want to make the class sad, but instead tell a story of my inspiration. The other characters that I’ve decided to add were children of the village. These children stayed with myself and the other volunteers while I was in Brazil. I’m also thinking about bringing in pictures to go along with my narrative. I have a whole photo album of the aspects that are in my speech, such as the actual building of the house for the children. We’ll see how it goes on Wednesday, but I’m feeling positive and looking forward to hearing my classmate’s narratives.

First Blog of the day.

My name is Rebecca, but a lot of my friends call me Rebeckie or Becks; thus, the name of my blog. I was required to start this blog because of my speech communication class, usually I would not blog. What I hope to acheive out of this class is a better sense of my public-self. I'm not a great public speaker, my normal routine involves not speaking in a room full of people that I do not know. I hope that by the semesters end, I will have no problem speaking my mind and dicussing my points so that others will understand. So if you see me in class, keep in mind that speaking in front of a crowd is new to me and I'm going to try hard to change that aspect about myself.
